On the first day of filming Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Matt Damon learned a lesson about ownership.

It wasn’t about acting, but about the shift from having a job to truly owning your career.

The story takes place in Greece. The filming location was a cave at the top of a half-hour hike. Damon climbed up, got there early, and waited for the rest of the cast.

Then he looked back and saw Corey, the crew member in charge of his wardrobe, coming up the hill carrying Damon’s armor. Behind Corey were the actors playing Odysseus’ crew, each wearing their own armor.

Damon has described the feeling bluntly in interviews since. He apologized to Corey on the spot. In his words: “That never happened again.” (Today Show, July 14, 2026)

It’s a simple story, but it clearly shows what changes when you move from being an employee to becoming an owner.

Nobody carries your armor.

In most jobs, other people help carry some of your responsibilities, and that’s intentional. There’s a payroll department, a compliance department, someone who orders supplies, and someone who fixes things when they break. It’s not laziness; it’s just how the system is set up, and it works.

The trade-off is that you don’t get to choose what you carry or where the group is headed. When you become an owner, both of those things change. The responsibility and the direction are now yours.

People thinking about owning their career often focus on the freedom, control, and potential rewards. But the real work is in the responsibility. Both parts come together in the same decision, and if someone says otherwise, they’re not being honest.

When you become an owner, no one else is carrying your armor up the hill. That’s the price, but it’s also the purpose.

The person in front sets the pace.

Nolan made the same climb as everyone else, every day. He has said the credit belongs to producer Emma Thomas, who told him that if he was going to ask people to walk up the hill, he had better be walking up it too.

That idea works just as well in a small business of three people as it does in a huge production. Owners can’t just hand off the tough jobs and watch from below. What you’re willing to do yourself sets the limit for what you can expect from others.

One person’s standard becomes everyone’s.

Damon has shared how he watched fellow actor Jon Bernthal film a scene in freezing water in Morocco. Bernthal pressed his hands together to stop shivering long enough to deliver his line. Nolan kept checking on him, but Bernthal kept saying, “Just go, just go.”

Damon saw that as setting the tone for everyone. Eventually, you’d be the one in the water, and you wouldn’t complain either. All business gets built the same way, and faster than most owners expect. A handbook doesn’t set it. It’s set by whoever is watched most closely which, in a business you own, is you.

Focus on the part that’s actually yours.

Damon explained his approach to a big production simply: the film had a thousand moving parts, most handled by others, and he was responsible for just one. He made sure to show up and be ready.

That discipline is even more important when you own the business. Owners have a long list of things they can control and an even longer list they can’t, like interest rates, the weather, or a competitor’s choices. The people who succeed are the ones who quickly tell the difference and focus their energy where it counts.

The journey is the part that changes you.

At its core, The Odyssey is about a long and difficult journey home—to a house, a family, and a life that are truly yours.

That last number is the most interesting. It’s not about money. It shows how the journey changes the person who takes it.
