Prediction markets are booming

The data on who actually wins offers a useful lesson for anyone thinking about a different kind of bet: betting on themselves.

Prediction markets have gone mainstream. On platforms like Polymarket, millions of people are now putting their money where their mouth is by buying contracts that pay out if an event happens and expire worthless if it doesn’t. The idea is appealing: if you’re smart, informed, and confident, why not bet on what you believe?

It’s worth looking at what actually happens to people who take that bet. The answer reveals something important about another kind of bet you might be considering: betting on yourself.

A genuine boom

By any measure, prediction markets have exploded. Polymarket’s annual trading volume climbed from roughly $73 million in 2023 to about $9 billion in 2024. Pew Research Center found that combined monthly volume across the major platforms rose from under $5 billion in mid-2025 to nearly $24 billion by April 2026.

Who actually wins

Here’s the part the headlines tend to skip. When researchers look at who actually makes money, the picture is lopsided.

In April 2026, the University of Toronto and ESSEC Business School analyzed more than 1.4 million users and 70 million trades on Polymarket between 2022 and 2025. They found that about 71% of users lost money. The top 1% of traders captured roughly 84% of all gains, and the top 0.1% took nearly 60%. As one of the authors put it, for the average participant, the expected profit is basically zero unless you are exceptionally skilled or just lucky.

A separate analysis by the Washington Post, from finance researcher Pat Akey and colleagues, found that a tiny group of users, around 0.05%, walked away with most of the profits, while ordinary participants lost at about the same rate as people betting at traditional sportsbooks. An independent on-chain analyst, Andrey Sergeenkov, estimated the share of unprofitable traders even higher, about 84% as of April 2026. However, that figure comes from individual analysis rather than peer-reviewed work, so it should be seen as a general direction.

entrepreneurWhy is it so lopsided? Two reasons stand out. First, the people who consistently win are usually professionals running arbitrage bots and high-frequency strategies, with information and speed advantages that individuals simply can’t match. Second, and this is the subtle point, these markets work as intended. Research consistently finds that prices are well-calibrated: a contract priced at 70 cents tends to occur about 70% of the time. That accuracy is what makes the crowd so hard to beat. You’re not betting against the house; you’re betting against everyone else’s combined information, and most of the time, the crowd is already right.

The best you can actually win!

Notice what every losing trader has in common: they’re betting on an outcome they have no power to influence. You can’t make an election turn out differently. You can’t will a final score into existence. All you can do is guess, and the data shows that most guesses lose.

There’s a fundamentally different kind of bet, and it’s the one The Entrepreneur’s Source® exists to help people make: betting on yourself.

When you explore business ownership, you stop being a spectator who bets on someone else’s outcome and instead become the person who determines the result. Your effort, your decisions, and your discipline actually move the odds. More people are drawn to this idea. In The Entrepreneur’s Source Generational Career Confidence Survey, 83% of respondents said business ownership is a good alternative to a traditional career, 80% said ownership offers more control over their careers, and 61% said it’s the best protection against AI making their current job obsolete.

But here’s where the Polymarket lesson really matters. Betting on yourself without an edge is still a bet, and the uninformed, undisciplined version of it loses, just as it does in the markets. The difference between the rare winning trader and the losing majority isn’t optimism. It’s process, information, and discipline.

That is precisely what a Career Ownership Coach® provides.

The edge is the coaching

coachA Career Ownership Coach® doesn’t just give you a hot tip and wish you luck. Through a structured Education, Awareness, and Discovery process, a coach helps you understand all your options, become aware of possibilities you hadn’t considered, and discover what actually fits your goals, your risk tolerance, and your own definition of success. It’s a journey from Employment to Empowerment™, moving from relying on an employer’s decisions to taking ownership of your own future.

Rather than chasing a long-shot payout, you’re building toward a result you can shape and measure on your own terms.

In other words, the winners in prediction markets succeed because they have an information and processing edge over the average participant. When you bet on yourself, a Career Ownership Coach® is that edge, but this time, the outcome you’re influencing is your own.

The bottom line

Prediction markets are a fascinating way to see how crowds price the future, and they are here to stay. But the lesson in the data is clear. When you bet on outcomes you can’t control, the odds favor the few. When you bet on yourself, with the right knowledge, process, and guidance, you’re the one holding the edge.

That’s a bet worth making well. If you’re curious what betting on yourself could look like, a conversation with a Career Ownership Coach® is a no-pressure place to start.
